Anyone else remember these countdown chains? I used to LOVE to make them as a kid to countdown to Christmas morning…
This year we have two exciting countdowns. Countdown to baby, and countdown to Christmas. How fun that we get to do both simultaneously.
It’s hard to believe, but the arrival of our little one is just about 14 days away. We are so thankful to be at 38 weeks. As of our doctor appointment this morning, the latest update is: to wait. Which, although never easy, takes on a whole new meaning this Advent Season. We know my doctor doesn’t really want us going past our due date- simply because of the little guy’s size. But until that day, we just wait.
One thing I have learned about being pregnant, is that people will say that darndest things. There have been a lot of “interesting” reactions upon sharing our due date of January 1st. We’ve heard a lot of “Oh no, a Christmas baby?” or “Poor thing might always have to share his birthday with a holiday” or my personal favorite… “Who wants to compete with Jesus’ birthday?”
If I may throw my two cents in (and I will, because it’s our blog- right?)…
Personally, I think it’s a wonderful time to be born. And I’m not just saying that because I don’t have a choice in the matter. I mean, really- what other time of the year is full of constant celebration and joy? And quite frankly, I can’t think of anyone better to share a birthday season with than Jesus. I mean, talk about the ultimate joint birthday party… think Jesus would mind a Transformers cake?
In all seriousness, I love that our family will always remember what Christmas is about- because we will have a point of reference. Just like we will celebrate the very day our son was born with cake and candles, within days will we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. What a powerful little reminder each year, to put things in true perspective. And what a wonderful way to teach a child about the real meaning of Christmas- and why everything else is a distant second.
Personally, I will never forget how it feels to be 38 weeks pregnant- imagining Mary traveling on the road to Bethlehem in the very same boat. To say ‘I have a whole new respect’ would be putting it lightly.
If anyone needs me, I’ll be here waiting. But NOT on a donkey.
