Mahna Mahna

Twenty years ago yesterday, the world lost one of it’s finest… Jim Henson. I remember that day in such full detail. I even remember exactly where my Mom and I were driving when we heard the fateful news on the radio. I wanted to cry so desperately, but felt strange being so upset over someone I had never met.

I soon realized I wasn’t alone. As the news reports flooded the airwaves, you could hear each and every individual struggling with that same aspect, making comments like…. “I feel like I’ve lost a best friend” and “A part of me will never be the same.”

Over the years, I have come to realize that my ten year old logic was, well, faulty. The beauty of Jim Henson is that we all knew him. We just didn’t know it. We all grew up with his “children”; Kermit, Miss Piggy, Rowlf, Fozzy and the rest of the gang. We would all “visit” him from time to time while watching the Muppet Show or Sesame Street. He wrote movies, shows, and skits for our child and adult minds alike, because he knew us well- and he knew what we would grow up to be.

We all still miss you, Jim. No one has been able to fill your shoes, but then… I’m not sure who ever could. The silver lining? You’ve left a legacy that will never let us forget you. We get to carry you with us, and get to know you all over again with our own children someday. We get to come full circle, and watch them grow up with you… just like we did.

And that, is something to smile about.

I can admit to you that I cried watching Big Bird sing. For the record…I had a teddy bear named “radar” just like my favorite bird did…still got him in the guest room closet :-)
